CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The 2018 California Tour for Christopher Newport men's tennis opened with one of the toughest matches listed on the schedule this season as the Captains took on 2nd-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges Sunday afternoon. The No. 30 Captains picked up a pair of points in a 7-2 loss against the Stags, a perennial national power.
In the match, CNU captured one singles and one doubles victory before the match was over.
Nicholas Ruzicka earned the individual win, coming at No. 5 singles, while
Andy Mason and
William Trang paired up for the lone doubles win at No. 3.
With the loss, the Captains fall to 3-4 on the season while CMS improved to 8-1 on the year.
CNU fell behind, 2-1, after doubles play, but got an 8-6 win from Mason and Trang on the third line. The duo downed Casey Morris and Jay Yeam improving the Captains improved to 7-0 as a team at No. 3 doubles this year.
In singles play, Ruzicka continued his strong junior season with a team-best 8-5 overall record after the win at No. 5. He defeated nationally-ranked Avinash Vemuri (7-6 (4), 3-6, 10-8) to pick up his first career win over a ranked opponent. Vemuri entered the season ranked No. 37 and Ruzicka handed him just his second dual loss of the season.
The Captains are back in action on Monday afternoon, taking on Caltech in Pasadena, Calif. before wrapping up the trip against Chapman and Redlands later this week.
