PASADENA, Calif. -- Sophomore
Andy Mason picked up a pair of victories, but the No. 30 Christopher Newport men's tennis team suffered a 6-3 loss at Caltech on Monday afternoon. The Captains fall to 3-5 on the season while the Beavers improved to 2-4.
Mason captured a win at No. 3 doubles and then at No. 3 singles during individual play. CNU also got a second win in singles play from junior
Nicholas Ruzicka, at No. 5.
In doubles action, Mason paired with
William Trang for a tight 9-8 victory over Connor Soohoo and Kevin Yu. It was their second straight win at No. 3 and helped improve the Captains to 8-0 as a team on the last doubles line.
After falling behind 2-1 in doubles, the Captains turned to singles play where the match was hard-fought throughout. Mason captured a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Derik Nguyen at No. 3 singles and Ruzicka managed a 7-6, 6-1 win over Soohoo at No. 5.
The team bout was decided on the top two lines where Caltech got the better of CNU's
David Reed and
Justin Cerny, in three sets. Reed won the first set, 6-3, but Varun Shanker responded to edge out the CNU senior (3-6, 7-5, 6-4); and Cerny won the second set over James Wei, but the Beavers' rookie pulled out the win (6-4, 4-6, 6-2).
CNU has two more matches in California, taking on Chapman University on Thursday, March 8 before facing No. 13 University of Redlands on Friday, March 9 to round out the trip.
