NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport improved to 3-1 Saturday with a sweep of Division II Davis & Elkins at Captains Park. CNU won both games by scores of 11-0, and the Captains have now given up just three runs in their four games played.
Sophomore pitchers
Aubrey Bates and
Laura Kate Moss earned the victories Saturday and Bates improved to 2-0 while Moss evened her record at 1-1 on the season. Bates yielded just four hits while striking out out seven batters in four innings of shutout work, while Moss fanned three in three scoreless innings pitched and gave up just one hit to the Senators. Both games were stopped after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
The Captains recorded six runs in the second inning of the opener and aded five more in the fourth frame. Senior
Leah Andrews cracked a three-run home run in the big second inning and sophomore
Grace Wild also went deep with a solo shot later in the frame.
In the nightcap, the Captains opened with seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and added four more in the second. Freshman
Patty Maye Ohanian knocked in four runs for CNU with a two-run single in the first inning and a two-run home run in the second. Fellow freshman
Emerald Cheesbrew drove home three runs, and also knocked in two with a home run in the four-run second inning.
CNU scored 22 runs on just 16 hits in the twin bill. The Captains had opened the season on Tuesday with a doubleheader split with Randolph-Macon. Davis & Elkins, from Elkins, West Virginia, was playing for the first time this season.
Keith Parr's squad, ranked 14th in the country, now will travel to Tucson, Arizona, for the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Leadoff Classic. CNU will play two games each day in Tucson from March 2nd to 4th.
