NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport softball squad hosts a non-conference doubleheader Saturday at Captains Park. CNU will take on Division II Davis & Elkins beginning at 12:00 p.m.
The Captains opened the 2018 season on Tuesday with a doubleheader split with Randolph-Macon at Captains Park. Both games ended with a 2-1 final score, with the Captains winning the opener and the Yellow Jackets taking the nightcap. Sophomore outfielder
Tara Deck drove home the winning run in the opener with a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning. Fellow sophomore
Aubrey Bates went the distance in the pitching circle and picked up her first win of the year.Â
Davis & Elkins, from Elkins, West Virginia, will be opening its season on Saturday at Captains Park. The Senators were 24-21 last season and will be playing the Captains for the first time ever.
The doubleheader for the Captains will be their final action before heading to Tucson, Arizona, for the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Leadoff Classic next week.
Keith Parr's squad, ranked 14th in the country in the NFCA's pre-season poll and first in the Capital Athletic Conference's pre-season poll, will play six games in three days in Arizona from March 2-4.
