NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will open up the 2018 campaign on Wednesday at 4 p.m. when CNU hosts Bridgewater in a non-conference battle at Captains Turf Field.

For those fans unable to attend the contest, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.

Christopher Newport is coming off of an 11-8 campaign in 2017 that saw the squad advance to the semifinals of the Capital Athletic Conference playoffs. The Captains welcome back nine players who started at least 10 games in 2017. Senior Catie Chess leads the way as the two-time first-team All-Region selection enters her final campaign ranked ninth in program history with 118 career goals. Meanwhile, junior Sarah Culver also earned All-Region nods last season after leading the squad with 47 strikes.

Along with the All-Region performers, Makenzie Regen started all 19 games last year while ranking second on the team with 15 caused turnovers and third with 23 ground balls. Julia Golden also started every contest and scooped up 11 rollers, while Tess D'Arcy added four goals and 10 ground balls after earning All-League accolades for her work in 2015.

On the other side of the field, Bridgewater comes into the 2018 season after posting a 10-7 mark last year. The Eagles eventually earned a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2017 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament. The squad, which was selected sixth in the ODAC Preseason Poll, returns a pair of All-Conference selections. Senior Kayla O'Sullivan ranked among the league leaders with 38 ground balls, 23 caused turnovers, and 47 draw controls last year. Meanwhile, on the offensive end, Anna O'Hara placed second in the ODAC with 42 goals.

In three previous meetings between Christopher Newport and Bridgewater, the Captains hold a pristine 3-0 record. The two programs last met in 2015 when CNU picked up a 19-2 victory at Captains Turf Field. During that game, current senior Carly Wilson contributed five points, while Colleen Bourgal added four goals. On the other side, current Eagle Kayla O'Sullivan caused two turnovers and grabbed a pair of ground balls.

Following Wednesday's tilt, CNU will return to action on Saturday when the Captains travel to Virginia Wesleyan for a 1 p.m. battle.
