No. 28 CNU Men's Tennis Rolls Past Methodist in Spring Opener, 9-0

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team swept the spring season opener on Saturday afternoon, downing Methodist University, 9-0, to improve to 2-1 on the season. The Captains got two wins apiece from all six of their starters, while playing indoors on a rainy day in Newport News.

The Captains raced out to a 3-0 lead with wins in doubles of 8-2, 8-5, and 8-4, in order. David Reed and Justin Cerny captured the win on the top line, defeating Reid Rose and Wynn Johnson. Methodist challenged for the No. 2 win, but Andy Mason and William Trang rallied for an 8-5 victory over Coleman Baker and Trent Harner. Finally, Dominic Lacombe and Nicholas Ruzicka defeated R.J. Clement and Hayden Wilfong, 8-4.

Four of the singles bouts were won in straight sets by the Captains, including Reed's top line victory over Clement (7-6, 7-5). Lacombe won (6-2, 6-3) over Rose at No. 3; Ruzicka captured a win (6-2, 6-2) over Harner at No. 5; and Trang downed Wilfong (6-2, 7-5).

Rounding out the 9-0 win for the Captains were Justin Cerny at No. 2 (6-2, 4-6, 7-6) over Baker and Andy Mason at No. 4 (6-1, 3-6, 6-2).

Christopher Newport will return to action on Sunday morning as they attempt to play outside against Millsaps College at the Eyre Courts on CNU's campus, weather permitting. That match will begin at 9:30 am.
