NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 28th-ranked CNU men's tennis team concluded a successful opening weekend with a 6-3 win over regionally-ranked Millsaps College on a brisk Sunday morning on the Eyre Courts in Newport News. The Captains improved to 3-1 with the victory over the Majors while handing Millsaps their first loss of the year as they fall to 3-1 as well.Â
Senior
Justin Cerny led the way on Sunday as the he capped a perfect 4-0 performance in two matches this weekend. Cerny won in straight sets on the No. 2 line in singles (7-5, 7-6), taking down Alex Centurion. He also faced Centurion in doubles with teammate Davis Plummer and the Captains top tandem won, 8-5, as Cerny paired with
David Reed.Â
The Captains took a 2-1 lead after doubles courtesy of that win at No. 1 as well as a shutout victory at No. 3, where
Dominic Lacombe and
Nicholas Ruzicka won, 8-0. The CNU pair handled Cameron Doles and Jacob Niehaus of Millsaps in the bout.Â
In singles, Millsaps captured two of the top three lines, but CNU swept the bottom half of the match, plus Cerny's win at No. 2 to pull away for a 6-3 victory.
Andy Mason recovered after dropping the first set at No. 4 to Josh Shearin, winning 5-7, 6-1, 6-2; Ruzicka added a second win with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5, downing Avinash Ananth; and
William Trang added a 6-3, 6-3 win over Niehaus at No. 6.Â
CNU will welcome 32nd-ranked N.C. Wesleyan College on Friday, February 23 at 5:00 pm in their next scheduled match. The Captains will also face 15th-ranked Case Western Reserve next weekend, with a 10:00 am match on Sunday, February 25.Â
