WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Guided by another historic performance by
Riley Garrison, the 23rd-ranked Christopher Newport volleyball team swept a doubleheader on Friday evening as the Captains upended Catholic, 3-1 (17-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-19), before toppling Lynchburg, 3-1 (25-19, 25-16, 23-25, 25-16), at CUA's Franny Murray Court.
In the opener against Catholic, Garrison equaled the single-match program record with 12 blocks. Only four Captains have ever reached that total, and Garrison is the first to accomplish it twice. She previously posted a dozen rejections against York (Pa.) on October 27, 2017.
In addition to her work on the defensive end, Garrison also added 14 kills and a .684 hitting percentage against the Cardinals. With that performance, she became just the second Captain in program history to record at least 12 kills and 12 blocks in a single match. Former standout Angie Cook is the only other Captain to accomplish that feat after posting a double-dozen against N.C. Wesleyan on September 15, 1984.
With her 17 total blocks on Friday, Garrison also became just the ninth player in program history to record 300 career rejections. The junior standout now has 306 blocks in her career, which places her eighth on CNU's all-time list.
Along with Garrison's efforts,
Katie Piper unloaded 22 kills during the twin bill, while
Megan O'Hara contributed 12 blocks of her own.
Rebecca Frey also stepped up with an outstanding effort on the back row. The freshman plucked 23 digs and converted all 45 of her reception attempts. She also unloaded six aces, including four in the opener against Catholic.
With the two victories, Christopher Newport improves to 18-3 on the season. The setbacks drop Catholic to 16-11 and Lynchburg to 9-11.
In addition to Garrison's performance against Catholic, Piper came through with her second straight double-double and her seventh of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs. O'Hara also chipped in with seven kills and assisted on seven of the squad's 14 total blocks.
Kellyn DeChirico also helped out on three rejections, while Frey plucked a career-high 13 digs to go along with her four aces.
Staying busy on serve-receive,
Katie Crofford also converted all 26 of her reception attempts against the Cardinals.
In the nightcap, Piper continued her run with her third straight double-double after collecting 12 kills and 13 digs against Lynchburg. She also unleashed three of the squad's 13 aces. Equally effective at the service line,
Hope Webb blistered three aces, and Crofford unloaded a team-high four winners. Additionally, Frey popped a pair to go along with her 10 digs against the Hornets.
Capping off her historic evening, Garrison added five more blocks and nine kills against Lynchburg. O'Hara had nine blasts and five rejections of her own, while
Mackenzie Wright sent back six attack attempts. Meanwhile,
Ashley Burgess handed out 22 assists, and Webb dished out 17.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday when the team caps off its road swing with a 7 p.m. showdown at Mary Washington.
