FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The 22nd-ranked Christopher Newport volleyball team saw its 13-match winning streak come to an end on Wednesday evening as the Captains fell to Mary Washington, 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-21), during a Capital Athletic Conference contest at the Ron Rosner Arena.
In a battle featuring the past two CAC Champions, Mary Washington survived on its home court. The setback snapped CNU's winning streak, which was tied for the fifth-longest active roll in the nation.
With the loss, Christopher Newport now sits at 18-4 on the season, including 4-1 in league play. The victory bumps Mary Washington to 14-9 overall with a 5-0 mark in conference action.
During the bout,
Riley Garrison continued to star on the defensive end with six blocks, including a pair of solo stops. The two-time reigning CAC Player of the Week also punched five kills and a pair of aces for the Captains. Meanwhile,
Megan O'Hara and
Katie Piper also played a role in three blocks during the contest as CNU finished with nine total rejections.
On the back row,
Josie Lucernoni plucked a team-high 12 digs. That marked her 18th double-digit dig effort of the season.
Hope Webb also secured six digs to go along with 10 assists, while
Rebecca Frey starred on serve-receive. The freshman was flawless on 12 reception attempts and also contributed four digs during her time on the back row.
Offensively,
Kellyn DeChirico knocked home four kills on just 10 swings, while O'Hara and
Katie Crofford also punched four winners apiece. Along with Webb's 10 assists,
Ashley Burgess contributed 10 helpers in addition to three digs and a kill.
Tiaralyn McBride popped an ace against the Eagles as well.
Christopher Newport will look to bounce back on Saturday when the squad hosts Salisbury at 2 p.m.
