BUENA VISTA, Va. -- The 33rd-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team improved to 10-8 overall this season with a 4-1 mark in conference play after shutting out Southern Virginia University Saturday afternoon. The Captains picked up their fourth consecutive shutout in Capital Athletic Conference action, locking up a spot in the 2017 conference tournament.
All six Captains that played on Saturday earned two wins, including an impressive day from junior
Justin Cerny, who did not surrender a single game to the Knights. Cerny first paired with rookie
Dominic Lacombe for an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles before taking to the individual matchups at No. 1 singles, defeating T.J. Snelson by a count of 6-0, 6-0.
Senior
Michael Dodd also registered a pair of 6-0 wins in his two set victory at No. 6 singles. The veteran paired with
Nicholas Ruzicka for an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles as well. Ruzicka then would go on to capture a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles for the Captains.
Rounding out the doubles victories was
William Trang and
Andy Mason earning an 8-5 win over Snelson and partner Tanner Bassett on the top line. Mason fought the hardest for his win in singles play, as Bassett stretched him before falling in a 7-5, 6-4 final.
Lacombe (6-0, 6-1) and Trang (6-4, 6-1) finished out the 9-0 win with victories at 3 and 4 singles. Lacombe added to his team-best record in singles play with his 10th career dual victory in singles. Trang's first appearance of the year at No. 4 improved him to 3-0 above the fifth line this season.
CNU will stay on the road for Sunday's matchup, as they travel north to Frostburg State University for a 10:00 am battle with the Bobcats.
