FAIRFAX, Va. -- On Saturday morning, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team wrapped up the 2017 regular season with a loss at Division I George Mason University, 5-2. The Captains continue to impress against tough competition, picking up a pair of wins in singles play and stretching another match to three sets.

Playing Division I scoring rules, the Captains fell behind 1-0 after doubles as the Patriots won all three bouts. All three matches went in the book as 6-3 wins for the home team, with Kate Huck and Johanna Ranta-aho playing on the top line for CNU. Lily Schreiber and Katie Carlson were at No. 2 for the Captains, and Isabelle Wessel and Claire Dockrill paired up for the No. 3 matchup.

In singles play, the Captains were competitive with their Division I opponents throughout. First, Ranta-aho secured a big win at No. 1 singles, taking down Sydney Green in straight sets (6-2, 6-3). Ranta-aho became the first freshman to win 20 matches since Angela Stallman set the single season record for wins in 2013 with 23. It is just the seventh 20-win season all-time for the Captains, as Ranta-aho joins Stallman, Frannie Shivar (2007, 2008), Lisa Dyke (2008), Lindsay Pantele (2008), and Kim Morrissett (2011).

CNU closed the score to 3-2 when sophomore Lily Schreiber managed a hard-fought win at No. 6 against Liz Lowe. The Captains underclassman won the first set, 6-3, before dropping the second, 6-1. In the third set match tiebreaker, Schreiber earned a key break and went on to win 10-7.

George Mason clinched the match in a thrilling three-setter at No. 5, as Nicole Haigwood managed to slip by CNU senior Katie Carlson. Carlson forced a match tiebreaker, but Haigwood held off for tha 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 win.

In the final match of the day, Claire Dockrill managed seven game victories against Scarlett Walston in the No. 3 matchup. She forced Walston to win a seventh game in the second set, before ultimately falling to her Patriots foe 6-2, 7-5.

The Captains wrap up the regular season with a 13-6 overall record and will now pivot focus to the postseason. CNU will host #3-seed Salisbury University in the CAC Semifinals on Wednesday, April 19, with match time scheduled for 3:30 pm.
