NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The regular season comes to a close as the Captains of Christopher Newport hit the road for two Capital Athletic Conference doubleheaders. CNU, with a record of 24-8 overall and 9-1 in the CAC, play two at Southern Virginia on Friday, and then conclude the regular season with a Saturday twin bill at Frostburg State. Friday's doubleheader in Buena Vista, Va., begins at 4:00 p.m., while Saturday's first-place finale in Frostburg, Md., starts at 1:00 p.m.
Christopher Newport controls its own destiny, as the Captains are currently tied atop the CAC standings with Frostburg State at 9-1. Saturday's games against the Bobcats will likely determine not only the seeding, but also the location, of the upcoming CAC Tournament. The top five teams in the eight-team league will advance to the double-elimination tournament next week, April 20-22, at the site of the top-seeded school. The three-day tournament will determine the conference's post-season champion and automatic qualifier for the NCAA Tournament.
Keith Parr's squad is coming off a split last Saturday at Salisbury. The Captains, in their 33rd season of softball play, have advanced to the NCAA's the last ten seasons, and have also won at least 30 games in each of the last ten campaigns.
Frostburg State has already split with Salisbury as well this season. Salisbury is presently 7-3 in conference play, followed by York and Mary Washington at 5-5. Wesley (3-7), Penn State-Harrisburg (2-8) and Southern Virginia (0-10) round out the CAC standings heading into the final weekend of regular-season action.
Friday's opponent, Southern Virginia, has struggled to a 9-21 overall record this season while the Knights are 0-10 in the CAC. The Captains have won 11 of 12 previous games against SVU.Last year at Captains Park, CNU recorded victories by scores of 2-1 and 12-4.
Frostburg State has a record of 21-11 overall to go with its 9-1 conference mark. CNU holds an 11-2 lead in the all-time series, and the teams split a pair last year at Captains Park, with the Bobcats winning the opener, 13-6, followed by a 4-3 CNU triumph in the nightcap. Frostburg State will host Mary Washington for two on Friday prior to the Captains coming to town on Saturday.
