ORANGE, Calif. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team bounced back with a 9-0 shutout victory over Chapman University on Sunday afternoon, despite a hefty rain delay that suspended action. The Captains improved to 3-3 on the season while the Panthers fall to 0-4.
CNU breezed through doubles action, giving up just one game in the three pro-set victories, winning 8-0 at No. 1 and No. 3.
McKinney Harwood and
Alexandra Drye picked up the shutout on the top line, while
Johanna Ranta-aho and
Meili Konell did the same on the third. In No. 2 doubles,
Emily Morgan and
Katie Carlson picked up an 8-1 win to sweep through tandem play.
In the individual matchups, CNU won in straight sets from 2-6, including a 6-0, 6-0 victory for
Claire Dockrill over Danielle Simmons at No. 5. Ranta-aho added a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2, taking down Nicole Fouts after surrendering only one game.
The most competitive match of the day came at the top line, where
McKinney Harwood took on Madeline Saunders. Saunders slipped by Harwood for the first set, 6-4, but rebounded for a quick win in the second, 6-1. The two players went back-and-forth in the third set match tiebreaker before Harwood captured a 10-8 win to finish out the match.
CNU has two more matches in California, taking on Caltech on Tuesday, March 7 at 3:00 pm.
