YORK, Pa. -- Taking a busy weekend head on with the first match of three in the span of 24 hours, the 24th-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team cruised to an 8-1 win at York College of Pennsylvania on Friday night. The Captains (9-4, 3-1) swept the doubles points and won five singles bouts for the runaway victory in Capital Athletic Conference play.
With the setback, the Spartans fall to 4-2 overall, 1-1 in the CAC. CNU will return home to face off against Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday morning, before road-tripping back to Baltimore for a nationally-ranked showdown with No. 13 Johns Hopkins on Saturday evening.
But first, in Friday night's weekend opener, the Captains showed off it's depth with an impressive road win. In doubles play, regionally-ranked
McKinney Harwood and
Alexandra Drye won at No. 1 doubles, 8-2, over Katie Wagner and Darian Naill. The other two doubles matchups finished in clean 8-0 finals, with
Kate Huck and
Johanna Ranta-aho pairing together for the win at No. 2 and
Isabelle Wessel joining
Emily Morgan on the court for the No. 3 win.
The win was Wessel's second doubles victory of the spring and the first with Morgan by her side. Meanwhile, Morgan continued to showcase her versatility in doubles by pairing with her fourth partner of the year for a win.
Wessel and Morgan also picked up pro-set victories in singles play after the match was clinched. Wessel won, 8-0, against Maisie Supp at No. 5, and Morgan improved to 3-0 this spring with an 8-2 win over Gina Liguori at No. 6.
The lone setback came at No. 1 singles where Wagner downed Harwood in three (6-2, 2-6, 10-5). CNU rolled through the rest, with Ranta-aho winning, 6-0, 6-2, against Rachel Wagner at No. 2, Huck defeating McKenzie Krout without giving up a game at No. 3, and Drye picking up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Naill in the No. 4 bout.
Ranta-aho's victory was the clinching victory for CNU.
Fans attending Saturday's tennis matches should be advised that parking will be at a premium. Along with three tennis matches (including two men's), Christopher Newport will be hosting a women's lacrosse match, as well as baseball and softball doubleheaders. Meanwhile, a high school track meet will be taking place at POMOCO Stadium, and the soccer teams will be holding their annual alumni games and spring showcase as well.
