ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- A well-balanced team effort led the 24th-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team to a 9-0 shutout victory on Wednesday afternoon, blanking St. Mary's (Md.) in Capital Athletic Conference action, 9-0. Junior
Kristi Wong picked up her first start of the year and finished the day with a pair of big wins.
Wong started at No. 3 doubles, pairing with
Claire Dockrill for a flawless 8-0 win over Savannah Bergen and Claire Bodine. She would go on to defeat Bergen at No. 6 singles by a final score of 6-2, 6-0.
Wong helped headline a sweeping victory across the board, as all six players finished the day 2-0. CNU led the match, 3-0, after doubles courtesy of an 8-3 win at No. 1 and an 8-2 win in the No. 2 bout. Junior

Johanna Ranta-aho paired for the win on the top line, while sophomore
Lily Schreiber and junior
Isabelle Wessel earned the win at No. 2.
In singles, Ranta-aho and Schreiber each captured straight set shutout victories (6-0, 6-0). Ranta-aho downed Marissa Romanek and Schreiber earned the win over Chelsea English.
Rounding out the Captains victories were Dockrill at No. 3 (6-0, 6-1) over Claire Bodine, and
Isabelle Wessel at No. 4 (6-0, 6-2) over Raziela Manangan.
CNU improved to 8-4 on the season with a 2-1 mark in conference play. The Captains have won six of their last seven matches and continue to impress during one of the finest years in program history. The newest Oracle/ITA National Rankings will be released on Thursday, with the first regional rankings of the spring also being announced.
Christopher Newport will return to action this weekend with a road trip to York College of Pennsylvania on Friday, March 31 before heading home for a conference bout against Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday, April 1 at 10:00 am. Immediately following that bout, the Captains will travel north to take on No. 13 Johns Hopkins later in the day Saturday.
