NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - From the first pitch of the opener to the last out of the nightcap, the Christopher Newport softball doubleheader Tuesday against Richard Bland College at Captains Park ended up taking nearly seven hours to complete. The first game was extended by a two-hour, forty-two minute rain delay that began just eight minutes after the opening pitch. Once the rain and lightning subsided and the teams returned to the field, the 20th-ranked Captains cruised to a sweep by scores of 14-1 and 10-2, with both games shortened by the eight-run rule.
Freshman second baseman
Grace Wild led the Captains in the opener, posting a double and home run and driving in four runs. CNU scored in each of its four at bats, winning the game in five innings, 14-1. Senior starter
Maiven McKnight allowed just one hit in three innings in the pitching circle and improved her record on the year to 6-0.
In the nightcap, Christopher Newport closed out the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the 10-2 final. Senior center fielder
Rachael Shiflett went three-for-three with three singles and sophomore catcher
Nicole Killen smacked a home run. Senior starter
Tara Heatwole went the first four innings to pick up the win. She is now 4-5 for the year.
Christopher Newport scored 24 runs on 21 hits in all and the Captains are 17-7 on the year. The victories over Richard Bland came in the final non-conference action of the season for
Keith Parr's squad, as the Captains now have six CAC doubleheaders left on the regular-season schedule..
Richard Bland is now 9-14 following the first meetings ever of the two schools.
CNU has a busy weekend coming up in the Capital Athletic Conference, where the Captains are off to a 2-0 league start. Christopher Newport hosts York College for a CAC doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Captains Park. Sunday it will be Senior Day as Penn State-Harrisburg comes to town for a 1:00 p.m. twin bill.
