NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport softball begins a busy stretch on Saturday, as the 20th-ranked Captains travel to Dover, Delaware, to take on the Wolverines of Wesley College. The doubleheader, scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m., will mark the first Capital Athletic Conference action of the season for
Keith Parr's squad, and begins a stretch of three twin bills in four days for CNU.
Following Saturday's action in Dover, the Captains will return home to host Penn State-Behrend on Sunday in non-conference action. The doubleheader with the Lions will start at 1:00 p.m. at Captains Park. Christopher Newport also has a non-conference twin bill scheduled for Tuesday, as the Captains are set to host Richard Bland beginning at 4:00 p.m.
CNU is 12-6 on the season so far, and the Captains are coming off a split last Sunday with Roanoke at Captains Park. Senior pitcher
Maiven McKnight went the distance in game two of the twin bill, shutting out the Maroons and allowing just two hits. She was named the CAC's Pitcher of the Week for her efforts.
Wesley is 10-6 heading into league play, and the Wolverines have lost their last four games. Wesley dropped a doubleheader to Widener on Sunday in its last time out. In the pre-season poll of coaches in the CAC, Christopher Newport was selected to finish second behind Salisbury. Wesley was picked to finish sixth in the eight-team league.
Sunday's opponent, Penn State-Behrend, is 3-7 so far this season. The Lions haven't played since March 10th, and all ten games so far this season came on a five-day trip to Florida.
