NORFOLK, Va. -- Playing with their freshly dubbed Top 25 designation for the first time in program history, the Christopher Newport women's tennis team dispatched of Centre College (Ky.) on Saturday evening, 7-2. The Captains improved to 6-3 with the non-conference win, after taking down the Colonels (3-5) at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center in Norfolk, Va.
Three of the six singles matchups would be stretched to three sets in what would prove to be a much closer match than the final score would indicate. In two of the straight set victories, the winning player was stretched to a seventh point, including a tiebreaker win at No. 3 for CNU's
Kate Huck.
Junior
Alexandra Drye would clinch the win for the Captains in the singles bout at No. 4. After suffering a tough loss in doubles play on the top line, Drye rebounded for a nice win over Abigail Kent in singles play. Drye captured the three-set victory by a final score of 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.
CNU won two of the three doubles matchups, including a shutout for Huck and partner
Johanna Ranta-aho in the No. 2 slot. Huck and Ranta-aho made quick work of Zena Maddux and Emily Zelichenok for the win at No. 2. In the third matchup, senior
Katie Carlson and junior
Emily Morgan earned an 8-2 win over Courtney DeLong and Abigail Kent.
The Captains won five of six singles matchups, posting a convincing 7-2 team win. The Colonels were tough, though, picking up set victories at No. 2, 4 and 5.
Claire Dockrill, on the sixth line, and Huck, in the aforementioned battle at No. 3, were the only straight-set winners for CNU in singles play. Dockrill downed Maddux (6-0, 6-1) and Huck took down Zelichenok (7-6 (6), 6-2).
CNU will return to action on Sunday, March 19, taking on former conference rivials from Methodist University at 9:00 am.
