REDLANDS, Calif. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team wrapped up it's annual spring break trip to California with a 7-2 setback to No. 18 University of Redlands on Friday afternoon, capturing a pair of wins in doubles play. The Captains (6-4) got wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles before the Bulldogs pulled away for the win in singles action.
Christopher Newport wrapped up a 2-2 week in the Golden State, dropping Chapman University and Cal Lutheran in between setbacks to 9th-ranked Pomona-Pitzer and Friday afternoon's loss to 18th-ranked Redlands. CNU is ranked No. 27 nationally.
In doubles play, the junior tandem of
David Reed and
Justin Cerny picked up the win at No. 1, improving to 4-5 at the top spot through the first nine matches. They defeated Joey Dulle and Jake Ly by a final score of 8-4. CNU took a 2-1 lead after doubles when
Nicholas Ruzicka and
Michael Dodd captured an 8-3 win at No. 3, dispatching of the Bulldogs' senior tandem of Parker Wilson and Tom Suchodolski.
As the match moved to singles, the veteran experience for Redlands was too much for CNU. Starting four upperclassmen, Redlands captured straight set wins at five slots. Reed opened with an opening set victory at No. 1 against 25th-ranked Chase Lipscomb, but after a tight loss in the second set, Lipscomb earned the win in the third. Reed ended up falling by a final score of 2-6, 7-5, 6-3, as the CNU junior continues to face and compete with the best in the nation. It was the fourth match against a ranked foe this season, with Reed falling to 2-2 in those matchups.
Ruzicka played well in the No. 6 matchup against rookie Avery Davis, but the Redlands freshman finished off a 7-5, 6-3 win for the Bulldogs.
CNU will now return home for three straight and five of the next six matches. The Captains will host N.C. Wesleyan College on March 18 at Noon, followed by bouts with No. 38 Washington & Lee and No. 21 Mary Washington.
