15th-Ranked Softball Travels to North Carolina for Busy Weekend of Action

CARY, N.C. - Christopher Newport softball has four games scheduled this weekend, as the 15th-ranked Captains travel to North Carolina to take part in the Grand Slam Triangle Classic in Cary.

Keith Parr's squad is 3-1 so far in the early season, and the Captains are coming off a sweep of William Peace last Sunday by scores of 8-2 and 6-1. The triumphs over the Pacers came in CNU's home opener at Captains Park.

CNU will play two games Saturday, facing Greensboro at 1:00 p.m. and then Piedmont at 3:00 p.m.,The Captains will then have two more games Sunday vs. Hood at 1:00 p.m. and Salem at 3:00 p.m.

The Captains will be looking for more solid pitching like they saw on Sunday. Senior starting pitchers Tara Heatwole and Maiven McKnight each recorded victories in Sunday's doubleheader victory. Heatwole took the circle in the opener, and McKnight in the nightcap and both were dominant for CNU. Heatwole allowed just one unearned run and four hits in six innings of work to even her record at 1-1, while McKnight went the distance allowing just one run on six hits. She is now 1-0.

Following a weekend of action in North Carolina, the Captains will be heading to Georgia next weekend for two doubleheaders at Emory in Atlanta on Saturday and Sunday, and then a twin bill at Piedmont in Demorest on Tuesday, March 7, during spring break at CNU.

Christopher Newport returns home to play Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday, March 12, at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
