NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport softball team heads into a busy final week of the regular season with key Capital Athletic Conference battles that will likely have ramifications on post-season play.
Keith Parr's squad is 25-4 overall and 5-1 in the CAC, and ranked eighth in the nation.
Saturday at Captains Park, CNU will host the Knights of Southern Virginia for a pair of conference tilts. Sunday, the Captains host the Frostburg State Bobcats for two. Both CAC doubleheaders are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Captains Park.
CNU has won its last six games, most recently sweeping two non-conference games from Meredith Wednesday at Captains Park. Senior outfielder
Scoop Simon had a huge day for CNU, going six-for-seven in the twin bill with two doubles and two home runs. She drove in ten runs as the Captains won by scores of 10-2 and 7-2. Simon leads the Christopher Newport squad in 11 different offensive categories heading into the weekend.
While Saturday's opponent Southern Virginia has yet to win a conference game this season, Sunday's foe Frostburg State currently leads the CAC with a 4-0 league mark. The Bobcats are 18-6 overall heading into a Saturday twin bill at Mary Washington.
Following the weekend double dips, the Captains will have three more doubleheaders next week. Wednesday, the Captains will travel to Mary Washington for two league contests. Thursday, CNU will host Bridgewater for a pair of non-conference games. The regular-season will conclude next Saturday, April 16th, when CNU hosts Wesley on Senior Day at Captains Park.
The CAC post-season tournament is scheduled to get under way on April 21st at the home field of the top-seeded school.
