Scoop Simon Drives in Ten Runs as CNU Softball Sweeps Doubleheader from Meredith

Eighth-Ranked Captains Improve to 25-4 with Wins at Captains Park

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Senior outfielder Scoop Simon has led the Christopher Newport softball team's offense all season, topping the team in ten different offensive categories. Wednesday at Captains Park, Simon went six-for-seven at the plate and drove in ten runs as the eighth-ranked Captains swept Meredith in a non-conference doubleheader by scores of 10-2 in six innings in the opener and 7-2 in the nightcap.

Simon plated seven runs in the first game by going four-for-four with two home runs, as well as a single and double...and then drove in three more in the second game while going two-for-three with a single and double. The offensive outburst gives Simon six home runs on the season, 34 runs batted in, and a .482 batting average.

Keith Parr's squad is now 25-4 on the season, with ten games remaining in the regular season.

Simon got the scoring started for the Captains in the first inning of the opener, smacking her fifth home run of the season that gave CNU a 2-0 lead. Simon then delivered a two-run single in the second inning that put the Captains ahead, 5-0. Her second home run of the game, a three-run shot in the fourth frame, gave CNU an 8-1 advantage. Christopher Newport closed out the 10-2 triumph with two runs in the sixth to end the game due to the eight-run rule. Senior Tori Clarke's run-scoring single pushed the margin to eight runs to end it for CNU.

In the second game, the Captains got it going early again with two first-inning runs on a single by sophomore Leah Andrews. Simon then went back to work at the plate driving in a run with a double in the second inning to make it 3-0, and then scoring two more with a fourth inning single to give the Captains a 5-1 edge. Sophomore Rachael Payne put the finishing touches on the sweep with a two-run home run in the fourth, her fifth of the year.

Junior Tara Heatwole upped her record to 11-2 in the opener, pitching five innings while allowing two runs and scattering seven hits. Senior Hanah Marshall earned the victory in the nightcap, going the distance while allowing two runs on seven hits as well. Marshall is now 7-1 on the year.

Simon's huge day at the plate leaves her with team highs this season in 11 categories: batting average (.482), runs scored (32), hits (40), doubles (11), triples (2), home runs (6), runs batted in (34), slugging percentage (.880), on base percentage (.602), total bases (73), and walks (24).

Christopher Newport returns to Capital Athletic Conference play this weekend with doubleheaders Saturday vs. Southern Virginia and Sunday against Frostburg State. Both will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Captains Park.
