Eighth-Ranked CNU Softball Sweeps Southern Virginia With 2-1 and 12-4 Victories

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Christopher Newport posted two more victories Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference softball. The Captains, ranked eighth in the country this week, defeated the Knights of Southern Virginia University by scores of 2-1 and 12-4 in five innings on a windy and chilly day at Captains Park. Keith Parr's squad is now 27-4 overall and 7-1 in the CAC, and the Captains have won eight straight games.

CNU struggled for runs in the opener, and then closed out the Knights in five iinings in the nightcap due to the eight-run rule. Junior Tara Heatwole went the distance in game one, holding SVU to one run on six hits to improve to 12-2 on the season.

Senior Tori Clarke plated the deciding run in the opener for CNU, singling home sophomore Rachael Payne in the fifth inning to give the Captains the 2-1 edge.

The Captains came to life at the plate in the second game, erupting for six runs in the first inning en route to the 12-4 verdict. Sophomore Brittney Walters was three-for-three in the nightcap with three runs batted in. Walters ended the game with a run-scoring double in the bottom of the fifth to push the CNU lead to eight runs.

Freshman Kayla Brennan pitched game two for CNU, going all five innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits. She is now 2-0 on the season.

Southern Virginia fell to 7-25 overall and 0-10 in the CAC. Madisen Muse pitched both games for the Knights, and fell to 2-12 on the season with the two losses.

CNU hosts Frostburg State Sunday afternoon at Captains Park in a CAC battle for first place. The Bobcats lost for the first time in conference play this season on Saturday, splitting a doubleheader at Mary Washington. FSU is now 5-1 in the CAC and 19-7 overall.

The CAC doubleheader Sunday is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
