YORK, Pa.- After a slow start Saturday, the fourth-ranked Captains of Christopher Newport got things rolling and swept York College in a Capital Athletic Conference softball doubleheader. CNU came from behind to win the opener, 5-4, and then posted a 10-4 victory in game two.
Christopher Newport rebounded from two losses to Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday night at Captains Park, but it took a 4-0 deficit in game one to awaken
Keith Parr's squad. York plated two runs in each of the first two innings, chasing CNU starter
Hanah Marshall, to grab a 4-0 early advantage.
The Captains began their comeback thanks to senior
Scoop Simon's team-high fourth home run of the season, a solo shot in the third inning, to make it a 4-1 game. CNU junior reliever
Maiven McKnight settled in for the Captains in the pitching circle, and held the Spartans in check the rest of the way.
The game continued at 4-1 until the CNU sixth, when the Captains plated three runs to tie the game. Sophomore
Lia Batchelor drove in a run with a single, and then two more unearned Captains runs came home on a York throwing error to even the game.
In the top of the seventh, Christopher Newport took its first lead of the game when sophomore
Rachael Payne singled home pinch-runner
Kayla Brennan to provide the 5-4 final verdict.
McKnight wiggled out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh that was the result of a walk and a throwing error that put the potential game-tieing run at second base. She allowed no runs on just one hit in five and two-thirds innings of work to pick up the victory, and is now 6-1 this season.
In the nightcap, sophomore
Rachael Payne continued her big day with a three-run home run in the second inning, and the Captains never looked back. Junior
Jenna Sprinkle and senior
Scoop Simon brought in runs with doubles, and sophomores
Lia Batchelor and
Brittney Walters delivered run-scoring singles as CNU built a 7-1 lead in the fourth inning. Sprinkle later would hit a solo home run in a three-run seventh, followed by sophomore
Leah Andrews'Â two-run single to conclude the 10-4 triumph.
Junior
Tara Heatwole pitched the first six innings in the nightcap for CNU, allowing four runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. The victory improved her record on the season to 9-2. Freshman
Kayla Brennan pitched a scoreless seventh to wrap up the win.
CNU is now 21-4 overall and 3-1 in the CAC. York fell to 17-7 overall and 2-2 in conference action.
The Captains continue their weekend in the Keystone state with a Sunday afternoon doubleheader at Penn State-Harrisburg. The CAC twin bill is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. in Middletown, PA.
