MIDDLETOWN, Pa.- Christopher Newport wrapped up a successful weekend in the Keystone state Sunday, sweeping a Capital Athletic Confeence doubleheader from Penn State-Harrisburg. The fourth-ranked Captains won the opener 11-0 in a game shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule, and then prevailed in the nightcap by a 12-4 score.
The Captains scored 23 runs on 23 hits Sunday and were aided by eight errors committed by the Lions. Only 11 of CNU's 23 runs scored were earned.
Junior
Tara Heatwole allowed just one hit in five innings of pitching in the opener, and struck out seven. She improved to 10-2 on the season with the shutout performance.
CNU's offense was powered by senior
Scoop Simon, who recorded six hits in eight at bats in the twin bill. Simon scored three times and drove in four runs, and her six hits included a double and two triples.
Sophomore
Brittney Walters and freshman
Sarah Clark homered for Christopher Newport. Walters smacked a two-run shot in the first inning of the opener, her fourth of the season. Clark's solo shot came in the fourth inning of game two, her first ever as a Captain.
Freshman
Kayla Brennan made the first start of her CNU career in the nightcap, and threw five innings while allowing only one earned run on five hits to pick up her first victory ever for CNU.
Keith Parr's squad went 4-0 in Pennsylvania this weekend with sweeps over both York and Penn State-Harrisburg, The Captains are now 23-4 overall and 5-1 in the CAC. Penn State-Harrisburg fell to 8-11 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
CNU will return home and will play its next six games at Captains Park, beginning with a non-conference doubleheader wtih Meredith on Wednesday. The first game is set to start at 4:00 p.m.
The Captains have 12 games remaining in the regular season, with ten to be played at home. The Capital Athletic Conference Tournament begins on April 21st at the top-seeded team's home field.
