NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The postseason is set to get underway for the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis program, as they will host the Capital Athletic Conference Semifinals on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 pm. The second-seeded Captains will host third-seeded Salisbury University at the Eyre Courts on campus, with the winning team advancing to play in the 2016 CAC Championship this weekend.
The Captains boast an overall record of 12-8 heading into the mid-week matchup, while the Sea Gulls are 10-8. This will be the third straight meeting in the CAC Semifinals for the two programs, with Salisbury winning, 6-3, in the 2014 matchup, and Christopher Newport avenging that loss with a 5-4 win on the road last season. The all-time series favors Salisbury by a 20-11 margin, but Christopher Newport has won six of the last eight matchups.
The other semifinal round matchup will be held at top-seeded Mary Washington, where fourth-seeded Southern Virginia looks to knock off the Eagles. The two winning teams will advance to play in the CAC Championship on the site of the higher seed this Saturday, April 23.
Earlier this season, the Captains and Sea Gulls matched up in Newport News with CNU capturing an 8-1 win. Eric Spangler won at the top line for Salisbury, but CNU won in straight sets in the other five singles matchups. In doubles play, the two teams were tightly matched, with a pair of 8-5 decisions and one 8-4 win for the Captains.
Junior
