Complete Box ScoreORANGE, Calif. -- The 37th-ranked Christopher Newport women's team backed up its huge win over a top 25 team on Sunday with a dominating performance at 34th-ranked Chapman University (0-3) on Tuesday for its second consecutive win over a nationally-ranked team. The Captains improved to 7-1 this season with a 6-3 victory over the Panthers, marking the best start since 2010 when CNU won 12 straight to open the year.
Director of Tennis
Eric Christiansen ramped up the difficulty of the CNU schedule in 2016 and, so far, the Captains have answered in kind. Facing Chapman for the first time in program history, CNU powered past the perennial power with three unblemished matches, winning 6-0, 6-0 at 4-5-and-6 in singles play. Showcasing a tremendous amount of depth in the Captains lineup, CNU dropped just one game in four singles matchups combined.
Despite dropping three points to the Panthers, the Captains ran away with the victory in the other six matches. In doubles action, CNU fell at No. 1, but answered to take a 2-1 lead with a pair of 8-1 victories at Nos. 2 and 3.
Alexandra Drye and
Emily Morgan paired to remain perfect at No. 2 doubles this season, improving to 7-0 with a win over Nicole Fouts and Danielle Simmons. Then, at No. 3, sophomores
Isabelle Wessel and
Claire Dockrill took down Maya Nowak and Annie Sullivan by the same score.
In singles play, CNU quickly clinched the team victory with four wins on lines 3-6.
Meili Konell raced past Fouts at No. 3, 6-1, 6-0, while Dockrill, Morgan and Wessel all won in order on the final three lines.
The spring break road trip to California continues on Friday, March 4 as the Captains travel to No. 18 Redlands for their next challenge against a nationally-ranked team. The match is slated to start at 2:00 pm.
