NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Christopher Newport begins a busy five-day span on Wednesday that will see the Captains host three non-conference doubleheaders at Captains Park. CNU, ranked 12th in the nation in the pre-season poll from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), is off to a 6-0 start and will host the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College Wednesday. The twin bill is slated to start at 3:30 p.m.
Keith Parr's squad is coming off a sweep on Sunday over Averett University. CNU won the opener, 9-3, and then wrapped up the nightcap, 12-4, in six innings due to the eight-run mercy rule. The Captains plated 39 runs last weekend in four games that included doubleheader sweeps at Lynchburg and at home over Averett.
While the offense has been picking up, CNU's pitching has been strong to start the season. All three pitchers that have seen action this season; senior lefthander
Hanah Marshall, junior transfer
Maiven McKnight, and sophomore transfer
Tara Heatwole; are 2-0 to start the season.
The Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon are off to a 3-1 start, and have split a doubleheader with Frostburg State and swept two from Dickinson last weekend.
Following Wednesday's play, CNU will host Eastern Mennonite on Friday for two beginning at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, the Captains will entertain Shenandoah for a double dip with first pitch at 12:00 p.m.
