CNU's Steve Artis to be Inducted in USA South Hall of Fame

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Christopher Newport men's basketball great Steve Artis will be inducted into the USA South Athletic Conference Hall of Fame. The class of 2016 was unveiled Tuesday morning by the conference, which served as CNU's home for more than 40 years.

Artis was twice an All-American as well as conference Player of the Year two times. He played for C.J. Woollum's squads from 1989-1993, and helped lead the Captains to three NCAA berths in four seasons.

Born in Franklin, Va., and a graduate of Ferguson High School in Newport News, Artis was a key part of two regular-season and two tournament titles in the Dixie Conference, which later became the USA South. Artis was named All-District three times and was the 1992-93 All-State Player of the Year. He was an all-conference selection all four seasons and three times was named to the Dixie's all-tournament team.

Artis is still third all-time in career assists in NCAA Division III history, and concluded his career as the all-time leader. He also still holds conference records for free throw attempts (28) and steals (11) in a game, steals in a season (94), and career steals (323) and assists (909).

Artis remains second in all-time scoring in CNU men's basketball history with 1,977 points in 112 games, an average of 17.7 points per game for his career.

Following his illustrious college career, Artis played professionally in Australia. He was inducted into the CNU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.

Artis will be one of six inductees welcomed into the Hall of Fame on Sunday, May 1st. Ceremonies will take place on the campus of Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
