Men's Basketball to Host Lycoming in NCAA Tournament Action

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Captains of Christopher Newport, 26-1 on the season, will host Lycoming at the Freeman Center in the opening round of the 62-team NCAA Division III Championship. The game will be on Friday night at 7:30 p.m., and will be part of a doubleheader that will also feature Brooklyn against NYU. The winners will then meet on Saturday.

It will be the first meeting ever for CNU with the Warriors, who are 19-9 this season. Lycoming, located in Williamsport, PA., won three road games last week to capture the MAC Commonwealth Conference tournament title.

Friday's doubleheader will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the Violets of NYU (20-5) taking on the Brooklyn College Bulldogs (22-6). CNU and Lycoming will play at approximately 7:30 p.m. The winners will then play on Saturday night with tipoff set for 7:00 p.m.

Christopher Newport will be riding a 17-game winning streak into tournament play. The Captains won the Capital Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday with a 68-67 overtime victory over Salisbury.

The Captains will be playing in the NCAA Tournament for the 20th time in program history, and the first time since the 2012-2013 season when they defeated Rutgers-Newark at the Freeman Center before losing at Virginia Wesleyan in the second round.

It will be the third appearance in the tournament for the Captains in the six-year tenure of Head Coach John Krikorian, who was named the CAC's Coach of the Year earlier on Monday.

The Captains have matched a school record for wins in a season with a 26-1 overall record, and went 18-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference. CNU became only the second team in the 26-year history of the CAC to go undefeated in conference play.
