The Captains fall to 2-3 overall this season.
In singles play, sophomore
David Reed battled through a long first set to capture a 7-6 (4) victory, but was outlasted by Jacob Dunbar on the top line. Reed suffered a 6-7 (4), 6-2, 1-0 (10-3) loss. Also earning a set victory in the first set was rookie
Nicholas Ruzicka, facing James Aronson at the fourth position. Ruzicka captured a 6-4 victory in the first set, but Aronson responded with a 6-3 victory in the second and raced away 10-4 in the match tiebreaker.
CNU got strong efforts out of
Justin Cerny, at No. 2, and
Steven Boslet at No. 3, as well, but would ultimately fall to their Spider counterparts.
In doubles action, Boslet and Ruzicka paired together at the No. 2 slot for the top CNU performance of the day. The Captains' pair stretched Richmond before falling 8-6 to Brice Polender and Caleb Troy. In the No. 3 matchup,
Arttu Fiva and
William Trang won five points in the 8-game pro-set, falling 8-5 to Aronson and Alex Hahn.
Christopher Newport will return to action next week as they make their annual Spring Break trip to California. The Captains defending national champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 3:00 pm on February 27 to start their trip, followed by matches at Chapman, California Lutheran and Redlands. All four are ranked in the ITA Top 40, including CMS as the top-ranked team in the nation.
