A LOOK AT THE CAPTAINS In the season opener last Thursday, Christopher Newport put its dogged determination of full display as the squad battled back from a 7-2 second-half deficit to force overtime against Washington & Lee. Unfortunately, the Generals were able to strike first in the bonus sessions as the visitors found an opening with just 17 seconds remaining in the second overtime period.
Despite the setback, the Captains showed off a well-balanced roster during the contest.
Joey Rolando and
Randy Foster both contributed three points, while
Ryan Mills also added a pair of goals.
Will Geise and
Jacob Hale also chipped in with a goal and an assist apiece.
On the defensive end,
Michael Mabry forced three turnovers, while
Thomas Courtney and
Brandon Moloney caused a pair of miscues.
Matt Hayden kicked off his junior campaign with a solid performance between the pipes as well with 14 saves, six ground balls, and two caused turnovers.
Tony Cruz also picked up right where he left off last year as the second-year star won 16 of his 23 faceoff attempts.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS Ferrum will be facing its first road test of the year on Saturday after defeating Shenandoah, 11-10, and Southern Virginia, 15-14, in a pair of home bouts to open the season. Tyler Fullem and Ryan Tesler have gotten off to outstanding starts this year as both standouts have five goals and four assists. Meanwhile, Marcus Boyer has also added seven points for the Panthers and Josh Brent has scored three times.
Cody Cooper has anchored the team on faceoffs as the senior has won 33 of his 50 battles for a .660 winning percentage. Freshman Koby McMahon has stepped in between the pipes and sports as 12.00 goals-against-average and a .455 save percentage. On the back line, Johnny Tallez and Dustin Browning have each forced a pair of turnovers.
SERIES HISTORY Christopher Newport boasts a perfect 4-0 record against Ferrum dating back to their first battle in 2011. The two programs last met in 2014 with CNU posting an 11-7 victory at Captains Turf Field. During that contest, the Captains benefited from some outstanding performances from a pair of familiar faces. Current assistant coach Aaron Chrzaszcz scored three goals in that contest, while team manager
Nick Kirschke won 18 of 21 faceoffs.
The two teams were scheduled to face each other last season, but weather caused a pair of postponements before ultimately forcing a cancellation.
UP NEXT Following Saturday's action, the Captains will remain at home for a 7 p.m. bout against Randolph-Macon on February 24.
