Box Score in HTML FormatNEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- A doubles sweep put the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team out in front of Salisbury University on Sunday morning, and the Captains would cap off their first Capital Athletic Conference win of the season with four wins in singles play. With the 7-2 victory over Salisbury, the Captains improve to 4-0 overall with a 1-0 mark in CAC action, while Salisbury falls to 2-1, 0-1 in league play.
Taking down the Sea Gulls, who were ranked 8th in the Atlantic South region as a team, Christopher Newport captured its third victory over a regionally-ranked opponent in its first four matches.
In doubles action, CNU remained undefeated on the season at No. 1 and No. 2 as
McKinney Harwood and
Katie Carlson improved to 4-0 at No. 1 and
Alexandra Drye and
Emily Morgan also moved to 4-0 at No. 2. Harwood and Carlson held off Natalie Savage and Zoe Moffat for an 8-6 win, and the Drye/Morgan tandem cruised to an 8-3 win over Claudia Lohn and Megan Soderlund. Rounding out pairs play, sophomores
Claire Dockrill and
Isabelle Wessel grabbed an 8-3 win at No. 3, defeating Megan Knapp and Taylor Cooper.
Dockrill and Wessel continued their dominant play in singles action as they finished out perfect 6-0, 6-0 victories at No. 5 and 6 for the Captains. The other two wins for the Captains came at 3 and 4, as Drye and
Meili Konell earned straight set victories. Drye defeated Lohn (6-3, 6-3) at No. 3 and Konell remained undefeated this season with her third win at No. 4, defeating Soderlund (6-1, 6-2).
At No. 1 singles, Harwood battled tough against regionally-ranked Salisbury senior Natalie Savage before succumbing to a 6-4, 6-4 setback. Zoe Moffat captured the only other Sea Gulls win over Carlson at No. 2 singles.
Christopher Newport will face Franklin & Marshall, ranked No. 11 in the ITA Atlantic South, on February 20 at Noon.
