CNU Men's Soccer Hits the Road to Face Salisbury on Wednesday Afternoon

SALISBURY, Md. -- With just three games remaining in the regular season schedule, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team will look to continue it's strong season on Wednesday afternoon, traveling to Salisbury University for a 3:30 pm kickoff. The Captains are unbeaten in seven straight, improving to 12-2-1 overall with a 5-0-1 conference record, taking on a Salisbury team that is 6-6-1 overall, 3-3-0 against the CAC.

The Sea Gulls have won back-to-back games, shutting out Marymount, 2-0, and Frostburg State, 3-0, last week. The wins snapped a four-game losing streak that included two overtime losses. CNU has also played a pair of overtime games recently, tying St. Mary's (Md.), 2-2, and dropping Mary Washington, 2-1.

This season, the Captains' league-leading offense has been one of the best in the nation, ranking 15th in scoring offense with 3.0 goals per game. CNU has scored multiple goals in all but one contest this season, including in each of the last seven games when CNU has posted a 6-0-1 record.

A pair of Christopher Newport players lead the league in scoring, as senior Jimmy Grace and sophomore Stephen Durbin have each poured in 21 points so far this year. Durbin leads the conference in goals scored, with nine, while Grace has added eight with five assists. Midfielders Zachary Ballard and Andrew Gogolin have each scored six times, while the potent attack has seen 11 different players register goals this season.

Defensively, seniors Harry Nodwell, Sammy Blosser, junior Zach Douglass, and sophomore Bobby Seifert have been the most oft used combination on the back line, holding opponents to a 1.05 goals-against average. The back line is holding opponents to just 9.7 shots per game, while the group has also combined to chip in offensively, with four goals and seven assists. In goal, sophomore Zach Pedini has four shutouts with a .741 save percentage.

CNU will be traveling to face Salisbury, which boasts one of the top defenses in the conference with a 0.82 goals against average. Daniel Brennan and Robert Fiackos have split time between the pipes, while Fiackos has four shutouts and a 0.63 goals-against average to lead the way.

Offensively, Dolph Hegewisch leads the team with 15 points, scoring six goals and three assists. Nick Carrington leads the team with two game-winning goals, ranking second on the team with eight points.

Following the Wednesday matinee, the Captains will hit the road to face Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday, October 22 at 2:00 pm. CNU will then return home to close out the regular season against Marymount on Wednesday, October 26.
