NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 18th-ranked Christopher Newport volleyball team will continue its homestand on Tuesday at 8Â p.m. when the Captains host Gallaudet in a non-conference battle at the Freeman Center.

Entering the match, Christopher Newport currently stands at 17-7 on the season, including 11-3 at home. Meanwhile, Gallaudet is 14-13 overall and 7-12 on the road.

A LOOK AT THE CAPTAINS

Christopher Newport has been strong on the defensive side of the ball this season, limiting the opposition to a .143 hitting percentage. Up front,
Hannah Miller ranks second in the CAC with a 1.07 blocks-per-set average, while
Riley Garrison is sixth with a 0.85 mark. Both players are also tied for the team lead with 10 solo rejections and have combined for 143 total blocks.

Meanwhile, on the back row,
Rachel Close is third in the CAC with 379 digs. The senior is averaging 4.57 digs-per-set, which currently ranks as the fourth-highest rate in program history.
Katie Crofford,
Josie Lucernoni, and
Evelyn Harper are all averaging over two digs per frame as well.

LAST TIME OUT

Over the weekend, CNU posted a 1-2 record during three home bouts. The Captains dropped a pair of five-set decisions to No. 4 Southwestern and No. 14 Mary Washington before upending Johns Hopkins, 3-1, in the finale. During the three matches, Garrison hit a team-high .397 while contributing 12 blocks.
Katelyn Newsome also excelled as the junior clubbed 32 kills and added 11 rejections.

Along with the standouts in the middle,
Maddie McCann led the team with 43 kills during the week, while
Briana Sutton contributed 40. Close also pieced together a remarkable effort after pocketing 30 digs against Southwestern. That total established a new career-high and marked the 17th all-time 30-dig match in program history.

SCOUTING THE BISON

Gallaudet comes into the week on a three-match winning streak. The Bison have been especially productive at the service line this year as the squad ranks 23rd nationally with a 2.70 aces-per-set average. On an individual level, Jasmine Jeter ranks among the top-30 in the NCAA with 64 aces, while Darriyan Thomas has clubbed 51. Adele Daniels has smoked 34 winners as well.

Along with their work at the line, Thomas leads Gallaudet with a 3.61 kills-per-set average, while Jeter has dished out 803 assists. Defensively, Thomas and Raelyn Fuechtmann are both averaging over three digs per set, while Camryn Skari leads the team with 54 blocks, including 15 solo stops.

SERIES HISTORY

Gallaudet and CNU have met 12 times with both teams winning six matches apiece. Christopher Newport won last year's meeting, 3-1, in Washington, D.C. During that match, Sutton led the Captains with 19 kills, including the 1000th of her career.
