Biography

2016 - Senior Season - Returned to the court in fine form after missing the first six weeks of the year while recuperating from an offseason injury … Blasted 10 kills while hitting .556 in her return against Wesley on October 5 … Reached double-digit kills in seven of her 13 appearances … Ranked second on the team with a 2.77 kills-per-set average … Clubbed a season-high 17 blasts against No. 4 Southwestern on October 15 before adding 14 more in the nightcap of the twin-bill against Johns Hopkins … Stepped up in the postseason with a terrific run, including a 16-kill showcase at Salisbury in the CAC semifinals on November 3 … Also had 11 blasts in the championship match at Mary Washington on November 5 before concluding her career with 10 more kills against Johns Hopkins in the first round of the NCAA Tournament … Chipped in with five blocks against the Blue Jays in the national playoffs as well … Finished the year with 19 total blocks and 27 digs.

2015 - Junior Season - Continued her impressive career with one of the most decorated campaigns in CNU history … Became just the third Captain to earn first-team All-American honors … Also was a first-team All-Region, All-Conference, and All-State selection … Named the CAC and VaSID Player of the Year … One of only 16 players at any level of the NCAA to finish with a .300 hitting percentage and a 4.00 kills-per-set average … Finished in the top-five in the conference in kills (391), points (421), and hitting percentage (.313), while her 4.12 kills-per-set mark stands second in CNU history … Honored as the AVCA National Player of the Week on September 29 after posting three straight 20-kill matches, including a season-high 28 blasts against No. 4 Emory on September 25 … Eventually finished the season averaging 5.00 kills-per-set and a .373 hitting percentage against nationally-ranked opponents … Posted at least 20 kills on six occasions, including 21 against No. 12 Eastern on September 12 and 21 more versus No. 4 Juniata on September 18 … Registered at least 10 kills in 24 of her 27 appearances, including the first 17 outings of the season … Notched her 1000th career kill on October 20 at Gallaudet, becoming just the fourth junior to reach that benchmark … Excelled on the defensive end as well, pocketing a career-high 203 digs, including 19 against Salisbury on October 7 … Finished the year with a team-high seven double-doubles … Also earned a spot on the Captains Classic and CNU Invitational All-Tournament teams … Was a two-time CAC Player of the Week honoree as well after receiving the award on September 29 and October 20.

2014 - Sophomore Season - Followed up her phenomenal freshman campaign with an even stronger sophomore season … Earned third-team All-American honors and was a first-team All-Region and All-State selection … Also collected second-team All-CAC accolades for her efforts … Led the Captains with a 2.92 kills-per-set average and finished second overall with 342 total blasts … Registered 18 double-digit kill efforts during the season, including three straight during the NCAA Regionals … Kicked off the year with a lights-out performance during the Captains Classic … Blistered 50 kills and hit .460 during the four-match Tournament and eventually collected MVP honors for that effort … Also earned a spot on the Juniata / ASICS Invitational All-Tournament team after firing back-to-back 13-kill efforts against SUNY Cortland and No. 6 Juniata during a doubleheader on September 19 … Equally impressive during the Pikes Peak Challenge after drilling Colorado College with 16 kills on October 3 before contributing 15 more against Wisconsin-Superior one day later … Came on even stronger in the postseason and was an integral part of the squad’s Regional Championship run … Notched 37 kills during the regionals from November 14-16 … Blasted 14 against Stevenson in the second round of the NCAA Tournament and 10 against Eastern in the title bout … Added the final nail during each of those matches after clubbing the clinching kill against the Mustangs before unleashing an ace to lock up the Regional championship against the Eagles … Kept her run going in the Elite Eight against No. 1 Calvin on November 21 … Came through with nine kills against the Knights and also added three straight aces during an unbelievable run in the first set … Finished the season with 29 aces, including 10 during the postseason.

2013 - Freshman Season - Made an incredible collegiate debut, earning first-team All-Conference and All-State accolades while also receiving the CAC and VaSID Rookie of the Year honors … Also shared the conference’s Player of the Year award with teammate Chastity Lacy, becoming the first freshman to earn a share of the league’s top honor since 1996 … Led the Captains with 300 kills while hitting at a .251 clip … Ranked second in the CAC with a 2.96 kills-per-set average in conference action … Posted a team-high 14 double-digit kill efforts, including a season-high 19 against Marymount in the semifinals of the conference tournament on November 7 … Continued her postseason dominance with 12 kills in the championship bout against Salisbury on November 9 before pumping 16 more in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on November 15 … Notched her first career double-double at St. Mary’s on October 23 after collecting 15 kills and 12 digs … Earned CAC Player of the Week accolades for that performance … Roped 13 kills in the season opener against Lynchburg on August 30 before firing 10 more later in the day against Berry … Posted double-digit kills in four straight matches from October 2-8 and had at least 10 blasts in 11 of the team’s final 18 matches of the season … Also recorded 29 blocks and 104 digs on the defensive end.

At Jamestown - Earned All-State honors during her last three seasons with the Eagles … Also was a perennial member of the All-District and All-Region squads … Named the Daily Press, Bay Rivers District, and Region I Player of the Year for her work as a junior in 2011 … Honored as the Peninsula Sports Club Player of the Year in 2012 … Picked up All-Virginia Gazette accolades during her final three campaigns and was named the Player of the Year in 2010 and 2011 … Three-time member of the Daily Press All-Stars as well…Member of the USA High Performance A2 team … Competed in the VHSCA Senior All-Stars competition at the Freeman Center and helped the East post a four-set victory … Also was named to the All-District, All-Region, and All-State teams for her efforts on the indoor and outdoor track & field squad … Set the school record in the shot put…Picked up All-District accolades in 2011 during her time on the basketball team as well.

Personal - Briana Rae Sutton is the daughter of Douglas and Leanne Sutton … Has a twin brother, Braden, and two older sisters, Kieley and Tara … Tara played volleyball at Virginia Wesleyan … Her favorite movie is “Taken,” and her favorite book is Stephen King’s “Under the Dome” … The person in history she would most like to meet is Karch Kiraly … Her dream vacation would include playing beach volleyball on an island … Majoring in sociology and Spanish.
