LEXINGTON, Va. -- Continuing its five-game road swing, the Christopher Newport field hockey team will head to Washington & Lee for a non-conference battle at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the W&L Turf Field.

Entering the contest, Christopher Newport stands at 7-2 overall, including 4-1 on the road. Meanwhile, Washington & Lee comes into the weekend with a 5-3 mark and a perfect 5-0 ledger at home. The Generals will host Virginia Wesleyan in an ODAC battle on Saturday at 2 p.m. before welcoming the Captains to town on Sunday.

A LOOK AT THE CAPTAINS

Through nine games, Christopher Newport has a 0.78 goals-against-average, which places the squad 12th in the NCAA. The Captains also rank eighth in the nation with four shutouts. Along with a suffocating defense, the squad has also been adept at earning penalty corners. CNU is averaging 11.00 corners per game, which stands 19th in the NCAA.

On an individual level,
Bailey Lien is 18th in the country with a 0.91 goals-against-average, and her .781 save percentage is the finest in the Capital Athletic Conference. Meanwhile,
Sarah Miller is among the top-50 nationally with three defensive saves. Along with the nationally-ranked competitors,
Rachael Allshouse leads the team with seven goals, while
Josie Morgan ranks second on the squad with 11 points.

On Tuesday, CNU registered its fourth shutout of the year with a 4-0 victory at Virginia Wesleyan. Against the Marlins, Lien notched three stops, and Miller added a defensive save. On the offensive end,
Carol Thompson and
Calli Ioannou both collected three points against VWC, while Allshouse and
Madison Doss also found the back of the cage.

SCOUTING THE GENERALS

Entering the weekend, Washington & Lee has won five of its last six outings. The squad's only setback during that roll came against 18th-ranked Mary Washington on September 21. Balanced on both sides of the ball, the Generals rank 37th in the nation in goals-against-average (1.38) and goals-per-game (3.25). On an individual level, Haley Tucker has a team-high 15 points and six goals, while Maggie Waxter and Lauren Paolano have five strikes apiece. Ariyel Yavalar has led the defense with a .776 save percentage and a pair of shutouts.
