DOVER, Del. -- With a pair of first-half goals, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team overcame tough weather conditions to get past Wesley College (2-5-2, 0-2-0) in Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday, 2-1. The Captains improve to 9-2-0 overall with a 2-0-0 mark in conference play.
Both teams battled against the rain and fog throughout the contest, but the conditions did little to cool the red-hot Captains offense, registering their tenth double-figure scoring game in 11 contests this season. CNU outshot Wesley, 22-9, in the game, and peppered the Wolverines goalkeeper, Tanner Yaw, with 11 shots on-goal.
Sophomore
Zachary Ballard got the Captains out in front in the first two minutes of action when he scored just 1:47 into the game. Then, after a handball in the box awarded CNU a penalty kick in the eighth minute, senior
Sammy Blosser delivered a hard shot off the left post and in.
The CNU offense remained relentless throughout the contest, taking 14 shots in the first half and eight more in the second. Sophomore
Stephen Durbin led the way with four attempts, putting three on-goal.
Wesley would cut the lead in half early in the second stanza, when Will Mileski served a corner kick to the head of Matthew Dina for the Wolverines' lone goal of the game. It was the only time in five shots on-goal that Wesley could get past CNU goalkeeper
Zach Pedini, who registered four saves. Yaw made nine saves for the home team.
Christopher Newport will stay out on the road for a mid-week matchup with the Southern Virginia University Knights on Wednesday, October 5. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm
