Video StreamLYNCHBURG, Va. -- Following two impressive victories last week, the 16th-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team will return to action on Wednesday evening when the Captains travel to Lynchburg for a 6 p.m. non-conference battle against the Hornets at Shellenberger Field.
CNU enters the showdown with a perfect 2-0 record after toppling Bridgewater and Ferrum last week. Lynchburg comes into the game with an identical 2-0 mark following triumphs over Lebanon Valley and Stevenson during the first week of the 2015 season.

A LOOK AT THE CAPTAINSSo far this season, Christopher Newport has displayed a potent offensive attack, which has helped the team outscore its opposition, 16-1. Two Captains have already registered hat-tricks this season after CNU went without a single one during the entire 2014 campaign.
Lauren Cheatham opened the year with three goals against Bridgewater, while
Carol Thompson drove home four goals on Sunday against Ferrum.
Along with the top scorers, sophomores
Mackenzie Neylon and
Alexa Weaver both have five points this year, while freshman
Cori Black has a goal and an assist. Incredibly, in only two games, nine different Captains have already scored at least one goal.
On the defensive end,
Bailey Lien has picked up a pair of victories and surrendered just one goal in 87 minutes of work.
Stephanie McKinney has also been perfect in her 53 minutes of work, while both goalies have benefitted from an outstanding defensive unit. Among a host of other defensive stalwarts,
Alexa Hendrickson and
Brittan Muir have started both games and helped limit the opposition to six total shots.
LAST TIME OUTOn Sunday, Christopher Newport picked up its second straight victory after toppling Ferrum, 10-0, at Captains Turf Field. During the game, Thompson became the fourth player in program history to record at least four goals in a game, while
Alexa Weaver added a pair of strikes.
Lisa Murphy also dished out two assists, and the entire defense held the Panthers in-check while holding the opposition without a single shot during the game.
SCOUTING THE HORNETSLynchburg enters Wednesday's contest riding a two-game winning streak after beating Lebanon Valley, 3-0, on September 1 before topping Stevenson, 2-1, on September 5. During the two games, freshman Kayla Copeman has a pair of goals, while Morgan Lammando was credited with the game-winner in the opener against Lebanon Valley.
Defensively, junior Beka Hess has compiled a .938 save percentage while making 15 total stops during the first week of the season. Ashley Heuberger has also contributed a defensive save to help anchor the back line.
SERIES HISTORYOne of the longest-running rivalries in CNU history, the Captains and Hornets have battled 15 times since first meeting in 2000. Overall, Christopher Newport holds a slim 8-7 edge in the series, including a 3-0 victory at Captains Turf Field last year.
UP NEXTFollowing Wednesday's game, CNU will return to the field on Saturday at 11 a.m. when the team kicks off Capital Athletic Conference action at Wesley.
