CNU Softball Opens Super Regional Friday at Salisbury

SALISBURY, MD.- The long-running rivalry will be renewed Friday as the Christopher Newport softball team travels to Salisbury University to take on the Sea Gulls. The Capital Athletic Conference rivals will be matched up in a best-of-three NCAA Super Regional, with Friday's game starting at 4:00 p.m.

The teams will then play Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. if necessary. The winner of the series will be one of eight squads to advance to the National Championship next week in Salem, Virginia.

The Captains are ranked 11th in the country and are 30-7 on the season. Keith Parr's squad is coming off three straight wins at Captains Park last weekend that captured the Newport News Regional. CNU defeated Salem College and Randolph-Macon College twice to move forward in the bracket.

The Sea Gulls are ranked fourth in the nation and are 32-6 after wins over McDaniel and Virginia Wesleyan last weekend to claim the Salisbury Regional.

The schools met three times this season, with CNU taking all three. The Captains beat the Sea Gulls by scores of 7-1 and 13-2 on April 4th in Salisbury. Christopher Newport then downed Salisbury 7-4 in the CAC Championship Game at Captains Park on April 18th.

The meeting on Friday will be the 67th all-time. CNU leads the series, 34-30, with two ties. Salisbury is 5-2 vs. CNU all-time in NCAA play, including two wins last year in the Super Regional round.
