CNU Softball Moves Up to 15th...Simon Named National Hitter of the Week...Captains Travel to Wesley Wednesday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- As the Christopher Newport softball team travelled to Dover, Delaware, Wednesday morning for a doubleheader at Wesley College, the Captains received two items of national news pertaining to their squad.

The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) moved the Captains up to 15th in the nation in its weekly Top 25 Division III national poll. CNU has won eight games in a row and the Captains are now 19-6 overall and 8-0 atop the Capital Athletic Conference. CNU had been ranked 21st last week, but made the jump following a Saturday sweep over Salisbury, the number two squad in the nation. The Sea Gulls fell in this week's poll to the sixth position.

The NFCA also named CNU junior Scoop Simon the Louisville Slugger National Hitter of the Week.Simon, an outfielder from Chesterfield, Va., hit .667 (6-for-9) this past week, with two doubles, three homers, four walks and eight runs batted in. The transfer from Randolph-Macon was 4-for-5 with six runs, three homers and seven RBIs in the sweep of Salisbury and also had two doubles in a sweep of Mary Washington at Captains Park last Wednesday.

The hot-hitting Captains will put their eight-game winning streak on the line Wednesday afternoon against the Wolverines of Wesley in Dover. The first game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. Wesley enters play with a mark of 18-9 overall, but just 1-7 in CAC action. The Wolverines are 6-0 at home this season.

CNU has crushed the ball during the winning streak. The Captains have scored 97 runs in eight league games for an average of 12 runs per game. Christopher Newport has now plated 201 runs for the season, an average of eight runs per game.

The Captains have hit 24 home runs for the year in 25 games played, with nine of them coming over the last eight games. Senior Sabrina Hill tops the squad with five, and now has 37 for her career. She is six shy of Jessie Atkinson for the all-time home run mark.

Following the twin bill at Wesley, Keith Parr's squad returns for a pair of home doubleheaders this weekend to conclude the regular season. CNU will host York on Saturday and then Penn State Harrisburg on Sunday. Both CAC doubleheaders will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Captains Park.
