NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Head coach
Eric Christiansen announced a time change to the nationally-ranked men's tennis showdown set for Tuesday, as the 39th-ranked Captains will now host the 19th-ranked Mary Washington Eagles at 2:00 pm. The two teams will face off in Capital Athletic Conference action on the CNU Outdoor Courts, with first-place in the league standings on the line.
The Captains are coming off a strong performance at 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins, where they dropped a tough 5-4 matchup against the Blue Jays to fall to 11-7 overall. CNU is 4-0 in league play, taking on the Eagles seeking an undefeated 2015 regular season against the Conference. Mary Washington is 17-3 overall with a perfect 6-0 mark against the CAC, rounding out their conference slate with Tuesday's match against CNU. The Captains will wrap up league play with a home match against St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday, and a road trip to Salisbury University next week.
The young CNU roster has impressed throughout the season, led by rookies
Justin Cerny and
David Reed. Reed, ranked 13th in the Atlantic South region, will play at the top spot where he has 11 wins this season. Cerny has played primarily at No. 3 and has a team-best 13 singles victories so far this season. The twosome plays together in doubles at No. 1 doubles, and boasts a 9-8 overall mark this season.
Mary Washington has a pair of regionally-ranked singles players, as Tyler Carey and Stratton Gilmore lead the way for the Eagles in 2015. Carey was ranked 20th nationally in the preseason poll, and is 9-5 at the top line this Spring. Gilmore has played at four different lines, primarily at No. 2, and has 11 wins in dual action.
The Eagles also feature a pair of regionally-ranked doubles tandems, including the Atlantic South's second-best pairing at No. 1. Carey plays with Evan Charles on the top line for Mary Washington, posting a 9-5 mark this season. Gilmore and Brandon Griffin are ranked 10th in the region, going undefeated in five matches together.
Christopher Newport has been strong in doubles as a team, winning 64.7% of their dual matches in pair play. The best group has been at No. 2, where
Steven Boslet and
Chiraag Shetty have combined to go 10-4, while three other pairings have won three matches for 13 wins in 17 doubles matches at No. 2. In the third line, CNU has 11 wins in 17 matches, led by
Arttu Fiva and
Max Katcher.
