BALTIMORE, Md. -- Facing the seventh nationally-ranked team on the schedule this season, the 39th-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team will travel to 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins University on Saturday. The Captains (11-6) will face off against the Blue Jays (4-5) at Noon in the second of three straight matches against nationally-ranked foes.
CNU saw a four-match shutout streak snapped against ninth-ranked Carnegie-Mellon last weekend on a neutral court. The Captains have been led by a strong contingent of first-year players, led by
David Reed,
Justin Cerny and
Max Katcher. Reed has played all 17 matches at No. 1 singles, registering 11 victories, while Cerny has posted a team-best 12 victories between lines 2-4. Katcher ranks fourth on the team with nine wins, including a 3-0 mark at No. 5.
In doubles play, CNU has won two-thirds of their matches this season in dual play. Cerny and Reed have played together, earning nine wins at No. 1, and the team has combined for 12 wins at No. 2 and 11 at No. 3.
Johns Hopkins is ranked No. 3 in the Atlantic South region, and features three individuals ranked in the singles Top 24. All three doubles tandems are ranked regionally, including 14th-ranked Noah Joachim and Nicholas Garcia, off to a 5-2 start to the year. The Blue Jays are led by Michael Buxbaum, ranked No. 2 in singles and sixth in doubles.
