FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Making its first ever Capital Athletic Conference Championship appearance, the 40th-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team suffered an 8-1 loss to 20th-ranked Mary Washington, as the Eagles captured their 12th straight conference title. Rookie Kate Huck earned the lone win for the second-seeded Captains (14-6), winning at No. 4 singles in the Edward Hegmann Tennis Complex.

The teams took to the indoor courts due to wet weather Sunday morning and it was the home team that took control of the match early. Unlike when the two teams battled in Newport News earlier this year, where CNU carried a 2-1 lead after doubles, the Eagles swept pairs play in the championship match. The regionally-ranked top pairing for the Eagles, Shelby Harris and Kait Brogan, pulled away at the top line for an 8-3 win, while CNU hung tight in the No. 2 and 3 battles before falling in both.

At No. 2, CNU sophomores Katie Carlson and Logan Eldridge led 3-2 before Mackenzie Smith and Caroline Mosberg took over, winning six of the last seven points to win by an 8-4 final. CNU's most competitive tandem came in the form of freshmen duo Kristi Wong and Huck on the third line. Taking on Alina Suyama and Chrissy Gaul, the CNU tandem led 4-3 and stayed within striking distance at 5-6 before the Eagles pairing finished off the win, 8-6.

Needing just two points in singles play to seal the conference championship, Mary Washington got straight set wins at 5 and 6 to lock up the win. Then, a pair of regionally-ranked Eagles earned wins for Mary Washington to pull ahead, 7-0. Harris, ranked 11th in the Atlantic South, won over McKinney Harwood at the No. 1 spot, 6-4, 6-4, and Alex Ritter, ranked 20th in the region, earned a 6-1, 6-3 win over Alexandra Drye at No. 2.

The Captains got their lone win at No. 4 singles as Huck won a third set superbreaker against Chrissy Gaul. The CNU rookie won the first set, 6-4, but dropped the second 6-1. With the match decided, the two played a super set tiebreaker, where Huck held off her Mary Washington opponent, 10-7. She won the individual match on a strong cross-court forehand, to get CNU on the board.

In the final match, at No. 3 singles, Carlson fought off three straight match points before falling to Mosberg, 6-4, 6-4.

The Eagles earn the CAC's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, improving to 15-7 this season.
