CNU Women's Tennis Closes Regular Season at Salisbury Thursday

SALISBURY, Md. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team will close out the regular season on Thursday, in what proves to be a unique scheduling improbability as they travel to Salisbury University for the finale. Due to the rest of the regular season results, the Thursday matchup will decide the second- and third-seeds in next week's Capital Athletic Conference Tournament, and the two will be matched up again in the semifinals on April 22. Though both teams already know they will be playing back-to-back, there is plenty on the line Thursday, as the winner earns the right to play on their home court in the playoffs.

The nationally-ranked Captains (12-5, 5-1) will look to close out the season at 2:00 pm with a bounce-back victory over the Sea Gulls after suffering a 6-3 setback to No. 20 Mary Washington in their last action. Salisbury (13-5, 5-1) has won seven of their last eight matches, with their lone loss coming to the Eagles, 9-0. Thursday's match is set to begin at 2:00 pm.

The postseason preview will feature the Captains talented underclassmen against the veteran Sea Gulls who are 8-1 at home this season. In doubles action, the Captains have been stellar, winning nearly 75% of their matches in pairs play. The top tandem has come at No. 3 doubles, where sophomore Logan Eldridge and rookie Alexandra Drye are 9-1 this season. Overall at No. 3, CNU has an .824 winning percentage in duals, with a 14-3 record.

In singles, rookie McKinney Harwood is ranked 14th in the Atlantic South region and has nine wins at No. 1 this season. Freshman Kate Huck leads the team with 12 wins, while sophomores Eldridge and Katie Carlson are tied for second with 11 wins apiece.

Salisbury also boasts a strong contingent in doubles play, winning 75.9% of their matches this season. At No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, the Sea Gulls are 14-4 in 18 matches, while Natalie Savage and Katie Youlios are 13-5 on the top line. Savage, a junior, plays at No. 1 singles and is tied for the team lead in wins, with 11.

Full scores and a recap will be available at CNUsports.com following the action.
