NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Two home doubleheaders this weekend will bring the regular season to a close, and the Christopher Newport softball team is looking to keep building momentum heading into the playoffs. A strong finish guarantees the Captains the regular season title and the right to host the CAC Tournament beginning next Thursday.
CNU has won ten straight games, all in the Capital Athletic Conference, and can wrap up the regular-season title in the league by winning two more games.
Keith Parr's squad is currently two games ahead of Salisbury in the standings with four to play, and the Captains control the tiebreaker due to their sweep of the Sea Gulls last weekend.
Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Captains Park, Christopher Newport will host the Spartans of York College of Pennsylvania. It will be Senior Day as the Captains honor their three seniors (
Kelley Foate,
Kelsey Lewis, and
Sabrina Hill) in a pre-game ceremony. Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Captains Park, the regular season concludes as the Captains entertain the Lions of Penn State Harrisburg.Â
CNU is 21-6 overall and 10-0 atop the CAC. The Captains are ranked 15th in the nation in this week's Division III poll from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, and have been on a scoring rampage. CNU has scored 122 runs in 10 conference games so far, an average of 12.2 runs per game. The Captains team batting average has jumped to .330 for the season, and CNU has hit 26 home runs in 27 games played.
Christopher Newport's pitching has also been outstanding, as junior
Hanah Marshall and sophomore
Krista Lewis have lowered the squad's ERA to just 2.77 for the season.
In addition to playing for a conference title and home-field advantage in the CAC Tournament, CNU Head Coach
Keith Parr can reach the 400-win mark with four victories this weekend. Parr, in his 12th season leading the Captains, has an overall record of 396-131-1 for a winning percentage of just over 75 percent.
York College comes into play Saturday with a record of 18-10 overall and 6-4 in the CAC. Penn State Harrisburg is 12-8 overall and 5-5 n the conference. The Lions will play at Mary Washington on Saturday before coming to Newport News on Sunday.
