NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- It's conference season for Christopher Newport's softball team. The Captains, 11-6 on the season, open play in the Capital Athletic Conference Saturday at Southern Virginia. The CAC doubleheader will begin at 3:00 p.m. in Buena Vista.
Keith Parr's Captains are presently ranked 24th in the nation, and are beginning defense of their 2014 CAC title. CNU beat Salisbury last year at Captains Park in the CAC Tournament title game to capture the league crown and automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
CNU is coming off a split at home on Tuesday with DePauw. The non-conference doubleheader marked the first action of the season at Captains Park due to poor weather and construction on CNU's home facility.
Saturday's road doubleheader with the Knights begins a busy weekend for the Captains, who will then travel to Frostburg, Maryland, to take on Frostburg State on Sunday afternoon.
Southern Virginia is 0-7 on the season and is coming off two losses at home to Mary Baldwin on Tuesday.
Live stats for the doubleheader will be available Saturday at CNUsports.com/live.
