CNU Women's Tennis Sweeps Pair of Matches to Kick Off California Trip

Complete Box Score vs. Mills College
Complete Box Score vs. UC Santa Cruz

OAKLAND, Calif. -- After seeing their first match rained out on Saturday, the Christopher Newport University women's tennis team opened their trip to California with a bang on Sunday, winning their originally scheduled match against Mills College, 9-0, before capturing a 6-3 win in the makeup with UC Santa Cruz later that evening. The Captains improved to 6-1 this season, and will have three more matches on the West Coast.

The morning match was a dominant win for the Captains, who dropped just three games in the 9-0 sweep. CNU raced out to an easy 3-0 start against the Cyclones, winning 8-0 in all three lines. McKinney Harwood and Kate Huck won at No. 1, while Katie Carlson and Claire Dockrill picked up their first win as a doubles tandem at No. 2.

With the first of two wins on the day at No. 3, rookie Alexandra Drye and sophomore Logan Eldridge continued to impress this spring with a sterling 7-0 record together. In singles action, the Captains won 6-0, 6-0 in five of the six matchups.

After traveling back to Santa Cruz, the Captains failed to get off to such a strong start, falling in two of three doubles matches. The Banana Slugs led, 2-1, after doubles, despite Drye and Eldridge's 8-1 win at No. 3. In the No. 1 doubles matchup, Harwood and Huck stretched their opponents, Courtney Lymburner and Katy Collins, to a long tiebreak, but ultimately fell 9-8 (10-8).

The Captains would bounce back in singles play, led by Eldridge and Huck at Nos. 5 & 6, respectively. Huck captured her second 6-0, 6-0 win of the day, while Eldridge improved to 6-0 this spring with her victory by the same score.

Harwood, Carlson and Meili Konell each added straight set wins. Drye won the first set, but fell in a second set tiebreak and then 9-7 in the third. Carlson improved to 6-1 this spring with the win, while Harwood is now 5-1.

CNU will now take Monday off before traveling to the University of Redlands, ranked No. 19 in the nation, on Tuesday, March 3. The match will begin at 3:00 pm locally, 6:00 pm Eastern.
