CNU Softball Defeats Meredith College Twice Thanks to Offensive Outbursts

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

YORKTOWN, Va.- The Christopher Newport softball team posted some big numbers Wednesday as the Captains swept Meredith College by scores of 10-4 and 9-2. Keith Parr's Captains, ranked tied for 22nd in the nation, are now 7-4.

CNU posted 19 runs on 17 hits in the sweep. The Captains blew both games open thanks to five-run innings.

The Captains set the tone for the day with a five-run first inning in the opener after the Avenging Angels had plated a run in the top of the first inning. Senior first baseman Sabrina Hill and junior third baseman Alexis Pope both knocked in runs with singles and then junior outfielder Meagan Jones drove in two runs with a double down the left field line to open up a 5-1 CNU lead.

Christopher Newport then added four more runs in the third inning to surge to a 9-2 lead en route to the 10-4 win. Sophomore outfielder Rachael Shiflett plated two in the third with a single to right bringing home Meagan Jones and freshman Rachael Payne.

Sophomore starter Krista Lewis went the distance in the first game and improved her record to 4-2 with the victory. Lewis struggled with her control, walking seven, but allowed only two earned runs while scattering seven hits.

In the nightcap, freshman catcher Hannah Cook had the right recipe for CNU...going three for three with four runs batted in as the Captains cruised to a 9-2 triumph. Cook opened the scoring with a solo home run to center field in the third inning for her first career long ball. She drove in two more runs in the fourth with a single to center and then brought home the Captains final run with an RBI single in the fifth.

Junior second baseman Tori Clarke was also three for three in game two, and freshman Brittney Walters and junior Meagan Jones each drove in two runs with base hits.

Junior lefthander Hanah Marshall went the distance in the nightcap, allowing just one earned run on four hits with five strikeouts. Marshall is now 3-2 on the season.

The non-conference doubleheader sweep came in CNU's first home games of the season, with the action taking place at the York County Sports Complex while construction work continues to be done at Captains Field.

CNU has now scored 30 runs in its last three games, all victories for the Captains.

Meredith is now 12-6 on the season. The Avenging Angels were victimized by four errors in the doubleheader. Freshman Taylor Jackson started both games, and took the losses to fall to 11-5 on the year.

CNU heads on the road for doubleheaders this weekend against schools in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Captains travel to Winchester on Saturday to take on Shenandoah and then play at Eastern Mennonite on Sunday.
