Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Va.- The CNU softball team experienced both ends of the spectrum Sunday, going from a big loss to a dominating victory in a span of just a couple of hours. The Captains, ranked tenth in the country, fell 8-0 in the opening game of a non-conference doubleheader at Randolph-Macon College in a game shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule. CNU then bounced back to post an 11-2 victory in the nightcap.
Christopher Newport is now 5-4, while Randolph-Macon's record is now 4-2.
CNU managed just two singles in the opener off Randolph-Macon starter Nelda Bagley, who improved to 3-0 with the victory. The Yellow Jackets scored four times in the third inning to open up a commanding lead, 5-0, and then added two in the fourth and closed out the game with a run in the fifth. Freshman

Kelley Foate registered the only CNU hits in the opener, as sophomore starter
Krista Lewis fell to 3-2 with the loss.
The offense returned for
Keith Parr's squad in the second game, as CNU exploded for six runs in the third inning to coast to the 11-2 triumph. Junior second baseman
Tori Clarke cracked a grand slam home run in the big inning, her third big fly of the season. Freshman shortstop
Rachael Payne also homered in game two, a solo shot in the fifth inning. Sophomore outfielder
Rachael Shiflett recorded three singles as the Captains posted 15 hits in the game.
Junior lefthander
Hanah Marshall went the distance in the nightcap, allowing two runs on just four hits. Marshall evened her record at 2-2 with the win, and yielded only a two-run home run in the fourth inning.
Christopher Newport is slated to return to action on Wednesday vs. Meredith.
